Reminds me of something that I read a long time back. That was an article distinguishing compassion, sympathy and empathy. Going by what they all mean, being compassionate is the most challenging since it's not only internal feelings on seeing the other's condition, but to express the feeling of love in deeds and actions towards them. This, even when the other is trying to do something against you. The benefits as I see is not only for the other, but more for the self in cleansing the self and rendering it stress-free.
