Reward

We have watered the trees that
blossom in the summer-time.
Now let's sprinkle those
whose flowering time is past.

That will be the better deed,
because we shall not be
working for the reward.

[Kalidasa]

TWIST Comment: Our personal definition of a reward can be different depending on our perception of ourselves and the world around. Expectation of getting rewarded at the end of a journey and treating reward as a motivation to act are the common falacies we fall into time and time again. When there is expectation at the back of the mind, keep an expectation of meeting with grief at the front of it to nullify the effect of any expectations not bearing fruit. For what we expect may not be what life has in store for us. By accepting what may naturally come or not come, we can improve the quality of our lives. Things do happen for a reason and at times the reason is not as good as we expect. Expectation is the root of all grief.
